Calcium is one of the most important nutrients your body needs to maintain health. It is essential to meet many of your bodies needs. Calcium play an important role in many body functions and development. Knowing how much calcium you need daily and where to get it can ensure that your body will reap the benefits of this great nutrient.

Calcium does many things for your body. Everyone knows calcium is beneficial to bones and teeth. It is also important to keep your muscles and nerves working properly. It helps blood clot and keeps your heart beating properly. Lacking calcium in your diet can greatly effect your health now and in the future.

When your body does not get enough calcium it begins to take it from the bones. When this happens, if the calcium is not replaced through your diet the bones become deficient in calcium. This can lead to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a disease where the bones get thin and brittle. It is fast becoming a major disease among older adults. Calcium is important at any age. For children calcium is essential to ensure proper bone growth. In pregnant women calcium intake is also important. The baby needs calcium to grow and takes this calcium from the mother, so increased calcium intake is important during pregnancy. Some guidelines for calcium are 1,200mg a day for children age 1-10, 1,500mg a day for age 11-24. Pregnant and breast feeding mother should get 1,400mg a day and older adults should have 1,500mg a day. It is very difficult to take too much calcium and intakes of up to 2,500mg have proven safe. Excess calcium is easily removed form the body through waste.

To get a good daily intake of calcium diet choices are important. At least three servings a day of dairy products is essential to maintaining good calcium levels. Broccoli is another great calcium source. Today many products, like orange juice, have calcium added. Making simple choices when buying foods with added calcium can help you to make sure you are getting enough calcium daily.

Calcium is often overlooked in its importance. Fortunately it is quite easy to add calcium rich foods into your diet. Preventing future problems is important. Frail bones are most often contributed to a lack of calcium. To keep your body functioning properly today and in the future make sure your calcium intake is sufficient.

The name cholesterol is a derivation from the Greek words: chole, which means bile; and stereos, which means solid. The suffix –ol is a chemical suffix for alcohol.

One of its major uses is in the synthesizing of bile acids. This takes place in the liver when cholesterol is transported. The formation of acids will be secreted through the bile. The importance of this cholesterol manifests as the lower intestine reabsorbs most of these bile acids, and are not all secreted out of the body. These are then cast-off into the liver.

Although cholesterol has a special role in certain biochemical processes, many, especially middle-aged persons, fear cholesterol. When we speak about cholesterol, for these people it is always about an element that can be most traitorous to their lives. For them, cholesterol is best associated with cardiovascular disease, a disease with a range of lipoprotein cholesterol moving patterns or one with high doses of cholesterol in their blood. This cannot be far from the truth, but unknown to many, there are two kinds of cholesterol: bad cholesterol and good cholesterol.

So, when does cholesterol becomes bad? Furthermore, how can we say if cholesterol is good?

When cholesterol is bad, the formation of a thick and hard deposit or plaque clogs the arteries. These arteries feed the human heart as well as the brain. Bad cholesterol manifests when there is too much low-density lipoprotein (LDL) that is circulating in the blood. This is the condition more known as “atherosclerosis”, to which this can cause a stroke or heart attack. Generally, the optimal level that human bodies should contain with LDL cholesterol is around 100mg/dL. More would increase risk of heart disease.

On the other hand, good cholesterol, or high-density lipoprotein (HDL), has a high level that seems to guard us against heart attacks. Many medical studies contend with HDL cholesterol as the element that transports some of it to the liver and away from the arteries. Other medical experts believe that it eliminates excess cholesterol that forms plaque in the arteries. Hence, the build-up of the cholesterol is slowed down.

There is another kind of cholesterol: Lp(a), a plasma LDL genetic variation. This is the kind that becomes a high-risk factor, wherein a formation of fatty tissues in the arteries can develop prematurely, when a high-level of this cholesterol is already starting to contribute to the heart disease. Up to date, there is still no evidence showing why this kind of cholesterol is an important factor for building-up fatty deposits.

If you are worried over your cholesterol count, you need to check on this. Control its build-up if you don’t want to get threatened with the heart disease. Your diet and your lifestyle are essential factors that affect your blood count. Your genes are another but you can’t change or modify this. Instead, looking into the first mentioned two factors should aid you to determine whether you are achieving healthy cholesterol level or not. If it proves that you are on the unhealthy level, seek medical help before anything worse happen. If it is otherwise, help yourself by keeping it from bordering the healthy level. Getting your cholesterol screened regularly, eating the right amount of food, exercising regularly, and maintaining your weight should be religiously followed to avoid any ugly circumstances.

Most vitamins are described as either fat-soluble or water-soluble. The simple mnemonic
"ADEK" is used to identify the fat-soluble vitamins: vitamins A, D, E and K. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored by the body, in our stores of fat and in our livers, whereas a larger proportion of the water-soluble vitamins we consume pass through our bodies and are excreted in urine.

Any vitamins can be toxic if taken in massively large doses, but the fat-soluble vitamins need to be taken more carefully because of their penchant for building up in our systems. Fat-soluble vitamins are less likely to need to be taken in supplemental form because the body stores them. Also, unlike the water-soluble vitamins, the fat-soluble vitamins do not lose their vitamin content in cooking and preparation.

We are all familiar with the term "RDA"-recommended daily allowance-that is used for vitamins and is found on many vitamin labels and food packages. However, you should also look for the "UL"-upper intake level-to make sure you do not take too much of your vitamins, especially the ones that are fat-soluble.

The description of different vitamins as fat-soluble or water-soluble doesn't refer to the form they come in. It doesn't mean that one kind of vitamins dissolves in water and one doesn't. The terms refer to the way our bodies handle the vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are absorbed through our stomachs and intestines and are stored in the liver, while water-soluble vitamins dissolve and are absorbed for immediate use. People are less likely to be deficient in fat-soluble vitamins because our bodies store them, but certain conditions and medications can cause deficiencies in any vitamin. When in doubt, consult your doctor.

Many people take vitamins because of their supposed anti-aging properties, but it's a fact that you need to supplement your vitamins as you get older. The anti-oxidant properties of Vitamins C and E are documented and help to counteract cell deterioration.

Vitamin B12 is one of the vitamins that many older people can be lacking. B12 is one of the vitamins that our body produces by chemical actions inside our stomachs. Some people don't absorb B12 properly and need to get their vitamins supplemented. Over the age of 50, up to 30 percent of the population will have some problem with B12 absorption. Sometimes taking B12 vitamins by mouth can help. However, if the problem is that the stomach cannot absorb B12 vitamins, it may be necessary to get B12 shots, which introduces the vitamins directly into the bloodstream. Your doctor can do blood tests to check your B12 levels.

As we get older, our ability to produce vitamin D also declines. While sun exposure alone is enough to trigger adequate production of D vitamins in most people, by the time we reach age 70 our skin only produces one-quarter the D vitamins it did from the same amount of sun exposure when we were 25. Seniors who are housebound, who live in the northern parts of North America, or who cannot go outside without sunscreen are likely to need to get their D vitamins from supplements.

Certain medications can also interfere with the body's ability to use the vitamins we normally get from food. Be honest with your doctor about your diet and lifestyle and ask what supplementary vitamins you should be taking.

Most medical professionals agree that children should not need to take vitamins if they eat a proper diet...

Most medical professionals agree that children should not need to take vitamins if they eat a proper diet. But many children are picky eaters and many parents worry that their children are not getting enough vitamins.

If children are eating enough that they are growing properly, it isn't as important that they get a variety of nutrients, and the related vitamins, in each meal. While a balanced diet is ideal for providing all necessary vitamins, most pediatricians say that as long as a child gets an adequate variety of foods within a one-week period, they are probably getting the vitamins they need.

However there are cases where supplementing vitamins may be necessary for children. Children who are on vegetarian diets, who don't eat dairy products, or who don't drink milk may need supplemental vitamins. Children who are housebound and do not get any exposure to the sun may need supplemental D vitamins. Infant formula usually contains all necessary vitamins, but for infants who are breastfeeding, pediatricians may recommend drops of vitamins that contain vitamins A, C and D, and newborns are usually given Vitamin K in their first week of life until their intestinal tracts develop the ability to produce it.

Don't assume that a multivitamin is the solution to your child's need for vitamins. Many multivitamins do not contain the recommended daily allowance of every vitamin. Check the label to make sure the vitamins you buy contain enough of the vitamins you feel your child isn't getting from food. Also check the dosage of vitamins by both age and weight; large children may need more vitamins than are standardly recommended for their age.

Not all high cholesterol levels can be lowered with diet and exercise. Sometimes medications or nutritional supplements are needed. Our bodies need cholesterol, but if your blood levels show too much LDL ("bad" cholesterol) and too little HDL ("good" cholesterol), you increase your risk for stroke and heart attack.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 100 million Americans have cholesterol that is higher than the recommended level, and one in five Americans has cholesterol levels considered "high." Food only accounts for about 15 percent of the cholesterol our bodies produce, so diet alone may not help if your levels are too high. Nutritional supplements or medication may be needed.

If you'd rather not take prescription medications, try nutritional supplements. Nutritional supplements with garlic, nutritional supplements with Niacin (vitamin B3), nutritional supplements with plant sterols, nutritional supplements with plant stanols, nutritional supplements with psyllium, nutritional supplements with beta glucan, nutritional supplements with red yeast rice extracts, nutritional supplements with policosanol, and nutritional supplements with fenugreek all have their proponents for lowering cholesterol.

These various naturally occurring substances work to combat high cholesterol in various ways. Some of these nutritional supplements, for example plant sterols and psyllium, interfere with the absorption of cholesterol. Soluble fibers such as beta glucan (found in oats and barley) and fenugreek have been demonstrated to lower HDL levels. Guggul extract is an Indian home remedy and is used in prescription medications in India to lower cholesterol and triglycerides. Red yeast rice extracts are traditional Chinese medicine treatments for the heart and contain statins, which are found in prescription anti-cholesterol medication.

Garlic is not just for flavoring; it plays a document role in disease prevention. Nutritional supplements containing garlic can have substantial health benefits. One substance in garlic, allicin, has antibacterial properties. These can be destroyed by cooking, so nutritional supplements are a good alternative to eating raw garlic.

Nutritional research into supplements suggests that eating a clove of garlic a day has health benefits. If you take nutritional supplements containing Vitamin C, nutritional supplements containing Vitamin E, and nutritional supplements containing selenium, you may be surprised to learn that garlic naturally has all these antioxidants.

There are various reasons for using nutritional supplements as a source of garlic in your diet. Unlike nutritional supplements, garlic powder may not have active ingredients. Garlic salt has lots of sodium, which nutritional supplements avoid. To get the maximum health benefits from raw garlic, you need to chop it and let it interact with oxygen for 10 minutes; nutritional supplements can be taken at any time.

When you eat garlic, you can chew on fresh parsley mint, lemon peel or orange peel to counteract garlic breath. Most nutritional supplements won't give you garlic breath.
High doses of garlic from any source, including nutritional supplements, can however cause you to excrete a garlic odor from your pores.

Cooking with garlic is an excellent way to painlessly safeguard your health. Roasting garlic gives it a milder flavor. Baked garlic is wonderful to spread on bread. Whether from food or nutritional supplements, garlic deserves its reputation as a "wonder food."

While children usually get all the vitamins they need from their foods if given a proper diet, nutritional supplements may be needed to help kids get the right minerals...

While children usually get all the vitamins they need from their foods if given a proper diet, nutritional supplements may be needed to help kids get the right minerals. Children often dislike the deep leafy greens that are iron-rich foods, and may need to get iron from nutritional supplements instead.

Kids and adolescents sometimes need nutritional supplements containing iron to prevent anemia. Babies who drink milk instead of formula may also need nutritional supplements containing iron. Once they start on solid foods, babies who don't eat iron-enriched cereals may also need nutritional supplements containing iron. Adolescent girls are also susceptible to anemia when they hit puberty, especially if they have heavy periods, and nutritional supplements may help.

In addition to nutritional supplements containing iron, some children may need nutritional supplements containing calcium. Calcium is necessary for strong teeth and bones. Children who don't like milk or who have milk allergies may prefer to get their calcium from nutritional supplements. Supplements of calcium are also found in many nutritional products that are fortified with calcium, such as certain brands of orange juice.
Even if your children take multivitamins, they may still need nutritional supplements for calcium, since many only contain 20 percent of the minimum daily requirement.

So nutritional supplements for iron and nutritional supplements for calcium may be important for your children, and there's another: nutritional supplements for fluoride. Fluoride builds healthy teeth. Although most municipal water systems include fluoride in the water, if you use well water your children may need to take supplemental fluoride. Make sure they aren't getting it from other sources, however, because too much fluoride can stain teeth.

Anyone who is interested in nutrition and nutritional supplements has probably heard of antioxidants...

Anyone who is interested in nutrition and nutritional supplements has probably heard of antioxidants. They are nutrients, minerals, vitamins and enzymes that protect your body from free radicals and can be found in many nutritional supplements. Free radicals are what cause the cut edges of an apple to go brown, make iron rust, and turn oil rancid. Nutritional supplements that contain antioxidants can neutralize free radicals. Because the nutrients are used up in the process, antioxidants need to be replenished regularly and nutritional supplements can help.

In addition to vitamins, minerals and enzymes, there are other compounds and nutrients that have antioxidant properties, and nutritional supplements have been formulated to provide them. Coenzyme Q10 and uric acid are two such nutrients. Antioxidants are necessary for good health, but they all combat different free radicals and so can require a broad spectrum of nutritional supplements. You may want to consider nutritional supplements containing Vitamin C, nutritional supplements containing Vitamin E, nutritional supplements containing beta carotene, nutritional supplements containing selenium, nutritional supplements containing manganese, or nutritional supplements containing zinc. Five servings of fruits and vegetables a day can also provide many of the antioxidants your body needs.

Free radicals are molecules that are harmful to the body because they contain an uneven number of electrons, and they either grab an extra electron from the body's cells or emit an electron into your body, which can disrupt cells or DNA. Antioxidants have all different ways of acting that interfere with free radicals' ability to damage your cells.

Of all the vitamins the human body needs, Vitamin C is certainly one of the most important. Most animals produce their own C vitamins, but humans do not. C vitamins are necessary for us to produce collagen, which keeps connective tissue and skin healthy. Deficiency in C vitamins disrupts the process of collagen formation.

Many people use high doses of C vitamins to treat colds, but the advantage has not been proved medically. C vitamins may just make colds feel better because, in high doses, they have an antihistamine effect. However, if you feel that taking C vitamins helps with your cold, there is no harm, unless you take way too much of the vitamins.

Vitamin C is also one of the antioxidant vitamins that, in proper doses, help protect the body from free radical formation. Deficiency in Vitamin C and other vitamins leaves our bodies more susceptible to disease.

Many foods contain C vitamins: citrus fruits, leafy greens, broccoli, peppers, strawberries, cantaloupe are some of them. C vitamins can be lost in food preparation, because of the exposure to air or water. However, most foods high in C vitamins will still have plenty after cooking. The average American gets 72 mg of C vitamins from their daily diets.

The recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C is 60 to 90 mg a day. Men need more than women. Smokers also need to supplement their C vitamins, because smoking depletes your Vitamin C levels; the recommended daily supplement of C vitamins for smokers is 35 mg more than the average person.
